Porter Robinson cria fundo em homenagem ao irmão que enfrenta um câncer

PRODUTOR UNE A ESTRÉIA DE SEU FESTIVAL COM O NOVO FUNDO FILANTRÓPICO

O irmão de Porter Robinson, Mark, foi diagnosticado e hospitalizado em novembro de 2016, com uma forma rara de câncer chamada linfoma de Burkitt e após o sucesso do tratamento, hoje vive livre da doença.

Por ocasião da estréia de seu novo festival, Second Sky, Porter aproveitará para lançar o Robinson Malawi Fund, em parceria com um dos médicos de Mark, Dr. Westmoreland.

O fundo terá um estande no evento para compartilhar informações, aceitar doações para a causa, doando ainda para o fundo, um dólar de cada venda de ingressos para o evento que tem já os ingressos esgotados, e fazendo a transmissão ao vivo online do festival que também contará com uma forma de fazer doações.

O artista informou em post no seu instagram que:

“A taxa de sobrevivência do linfoma de Burkitt nos EUA é de 90% ou mais. Mas para as crianças no Malawi, onde é muito mais comum devido à conexão entre a malária e este tipo de câncer, a taxa de sobrevivência pode ser tão baixa quanto 29%. Um dos médicos de Mark, Dr. Westmoreland, lidera o programa de câncer pediátrico que a UNC opera no Malaui.

Estou começando um fundo em cooperação com a UNC para ajudar a melhorar a taxa de sobrevivência naquela região, para que essas famílias não precisem perder desnecessariamente seus entes queridos. Nesse caso, mais recursos se traduzem diretamente em taxas de sobrevivência mais altas”.

in november of 2016, my then 17-year-old younger brother Mark was hospitalized with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called Burkitt lymphoma. he had a mass in his abdomen that was doubling in size every 24 hours. mark is pretty much my best friend – it was utterly devastating and one of the most difficult things i’ve ever been through (and surely a million times worse for him). through mark’s own fortitude, and through the high quality of care from his doctors (Drs. Westmoreland & Hipps), nurses and staff at @UNCMedicine, i’m extremely happy to say that, as of February 2017 Mark finished his treatment and is now 100% cancer free and thriving. here’s why i’m bringing this up: the survival rate for Burkitt lymphoma in the US is 90% or higher. but for kids in malawi, where it’s much more common due to the connection between malaria and this form of cancer, the survival rate can be as low as about 29%. one of Mark’s doctors, Dr. Westmoreland, leads the pediatric cancer program that UNC operates in Malawi. i’m starting a fund in cooperation with UNC to help improve the survival rate in that region so that those families won’t have to needlessly lose loved ones. in this case, more resources translates directly into higher survival rates.
